About Samburu
Samburu National Reserve is a premier game reserve located along the banks of Ewaso Ngiro River. Ewaso Ngiro River traverses/ lies between Samburu National Reserve and the Buffalo Springs National Reserve creating a unique wildlife ecosystem that is wholly reliant on the river. The reserves are rich in wildlife with fame for abundance in rare northern specialist species such as the Grevy Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Reticulated Giraffe, Gerenuk and the Beisa Oryx (Also referred as Samburu Special). The Samburu National Reserve was one of the two areas in which conservationists George and Joy Adamson raised Elsa the Lioness, made famous in the best-selling book and award winning movie Born Free.
The Elephant Watch Camp lies within the park. The Samburu National Reserve is also the home of Kamunyak, a lioness famous for adopting oryx calves. The park presents a chance for tourists to interact with local indigenous communities and learn about their preserved ways of lives that blends with the unique wildlife ecosystems.
